GYNECOLOGY:

 surgical alternatives for fibroids

Variations of myomectomy — in which uterine fibroids are destroyed without actually removing them — include:

  • Endometrial ablation. This treatment uses heat to destroy the lining of the uterus, either ending menstruation or reducing the menstrual flow. Endometrial ablation is effective in stopping abnormal bleeding, but doesn't affect fibroids outside the interior lining of the uterus.
  • Uterine Artery Embolization.  Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a minimally invasive treatment for fibroid tumors in the uterus. In this procedure, a Saint John’s radiologist uses image guidance to inject small particles into the uterine arteries so as to block blood flow. As a result, these vessels become closed off and the fibroid tissue shrinks. In most cases, symptoms are relieved. Advantages over surgery include: no incision and a shorter recovery time. However, fibroids can return if the vessels re-open and this procedure is not recommended for women who wish to become pregnant in the future.
  • Fibroid Surgery

The surgeons associated with Women’s Health at Saint John’s Health Center are experts in the field of fibroid surgery and will discuss the best options with each patient.
